Reducing Waste in the Fresh Meat Sector

With climate change already upon us, businesses are looking for ways to improve their environmental performance while at the same time using resources wisely. As a matter of fact, many have targets to meet as part of their commitment to curb global warming. However, they cannot achieve this without the help of suppliers as they also have an important role to play when it comes to securing the environment. This is mostly the case with meat water consumption since the fresh meat sector is one of the largest producers of waste.

So how does a meat factory contribute to an increase in waste? Well, there are so many things that take place during meat processing that in turn lead to global warming. Among the most notable causes of waste include line stops which can lead to scalding, damage in processing, mechanical issues with wrapping, returns by customers to mention a few. The good news is that there are numerous ways in which factories can reduce waste in the fresh meat sector. Here are some of them.

Determine Where Waste is Being Created

To start things off, you will have to find out where and why waste is being created as part of business’s activities. One of the easiest ways in which you can achieve this is by carrying out a waste ‘walk-around.’ Through this action, you will gain an overview of the main processes and in turn figure out the areas that need improvement. It is only then that you can put in place the mandatory measures aimed at curbing meat global warming.

Calculate the Cost

Aside from determining where waste is being created and why, you will have to calculate the cost. Keep in mind the true cost of waste is not only limited to the charges for disposal but also includes wasted energy, raw materials and labor. By calculating your current waste, it will prove quite easy for you to compare future performance thus putting more emphasis on the impactful changes you can make. Through this action, you can no longer worry about meat waste as a result of your day to day activities.

Health Meat

We can never conclude without mentioning the essence of switching to healthy meat in curbing global warming. A high number of meat waste emanates from cows and sheep and hence it would be better for factories to switch to chicken. The good news is that many people are already cutting down their meat consumption with the main intention of curbing global warming. This does not mean going vegan since you can still eat meat or protein-based alternatives.

The Bottom Line

Reducing waste in the fresh meat sector does not have to be stressful as most people tend to think. Simply make use of the above-mentioned tips and you are good to go. In case of any issues, then you are free to seek the help of experts and they will be more than happy to offer assistance.
