Sports Jerseys Take Over Everyday Street Style This Summer

Visit just about any major urban center today and you will encounter a new thing: football shirts that were once confined to the stands or the pub on match day are now everyday fashion. From baggy national shirts to retro club crests, to the latest collector’s items from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, consumers are sporting football shirts at cafes, office blocks, music festivals, and nightclubs. It has been a slow wave over the past few years, culminating with the 2026 tournament being hosted domestically in North America.

The magnitude of the shift was illustrated in Pinterest’s Summer 2026 Trend Report, which recorded an 840 percent rise in searches for World Cup jerseys and a big upward spike in particular styles incorporating such jerseys for countries including Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina. What started out as a niche style known as blokecore (a combination of British football and streetwear), now has an all by itself appeal.

No longer are consumers waiting for the match to get into a jerseyrather, they’re adopting it as a stylish jersey that can be worn with jeans, smart trousers, cargo shorts, or even skirts with heels. The appeal is straightforward. A great jersey has a phenomenal designcolors, graphic elementsand it simply feels right, not forced.

Combine a vintage Brazil yellow jersey with what look like wide-leg jeans and a crisp sneakeror crop the vintage kit and layer it under a blazer, thrown over an unbuttoned shirtand instantly it feels polished but not “trying”everyone from Gwen Stefani to younger Instagram influencers has made this kind of look reasonable and cooland ubiquitous: Designers and brands have been eager to react. Despite the FIFA deadline, limited edition collaborations between football brands and fashion were selling out nearly immediately.

On resale sites, searches for current and Mainly vintage shirts spiked. Mexico and Brazil kits did Mainly well; often outperforming sales projections even once their teams had been eliminated from the tournament. The jersey is increasingly considered a fashion item as well as a sports merchandise. What adds to the appeal is the personal nature of the styling. While some choose to maintain the integrity of the look by combining the sportswear with the traditional fan uniform of the t- shirt, shorts and trainers, others take the look even further by combining the vintage sportswear with more unconventional items of clothingwhether a full-length skirt, well-cut coat, or an eye-catching piece of jewelry.

The benefit to this is that it has created a versatile uniform that can go easily from running errands in the day to a night out. In reality the World Cup is throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico has just made everything that much more visible. Games are being played in cities that don’t Mainly live and breathe the game, so the visual language of the game has travelled much further than what would normally be the case. Fans are travelling, locals are caught up in the energy of this event, and the jersey is today a shared cue that is spreading well beyond the stadium walls.
