Despite equality in law, discrimination against domestic workers continues in Brazil. It has been made even worse during the coronavirus pandemic as the first victim of COVID-19 was a diabetic domestic worker. The 63-year-old woman was diagnosed with the disease after working for her employer, a wealthy businesswoman who had gone on holiday to Italy in March.

The woman was unaware that her housekeeper had caught the disease from her and didn’t inform her about it. Earlier, a 63-year-old female teacher was killed by an attacker in Saquarema in northeast Brazil.

The incident came just days after a firefighter in Israel succumbed to injuries he suffered while trying to rescue a man trapped inside an eight-meter pit. He had a multi-system injury, including respiratory and brain damage. The Galilee Medical Center announced that the firefighter, Dekel Marciano, had died on Sunday. He was the second firefighter to die in a three-day rescue operation. His colleague, Amir Shteinfeld, died on Friday.
