According to recent reports, cargo traffic at major Indian ports grew by 3.5% YoY in May 2023, with coal traffic experiencing a significant increase of 20%. This rise in coal traffic can be attributed to increased imports due to power companies being asked to ensure a 6% blending of imported coal to meet the expected surge in demand. Coal constitutes approximately 25% of the total cargo traffic, while containerized cargo, iron ores, and fertilizers also saw YoY growth. Despite some port closures, the positive momentum will continue in June, with traffic expected to rise by 5%.
India’s coal imports have been on the rise for the past few months, and this trend has positively impacted the country’s cargo traffic. Although this increase in cargo traffic benefits the economy, it is essential to ensure safety measures are in place to prevent harm to workers. Employers must take responsibility for creating a safe and respectful workplace culture, and employees should be aware of their rights and responsibilities. By doing so, a workplace can be created where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
