ChatGPT Creator Sam Altman Meets PM Modi to Discuss the Potential of AI in India

The OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is in India and has met with Prime Minister Narender Modi to discuss the future of AI in the country. The 38-year-old is a big fan of India’s tech ecosystem and believes that the country has the potential to be one of the world’s leading AI powers.

According to a tweet by Altman, he had a great conversation with Modi and discussed how the country could benefit from AI. He also discussed the need for proper regulations to handle AI’s downsides. The CEO of the artificial intelligence (AI) company is currently on a world tour, and India is one of his stops.

He shared a picture of himself with the Prime Minister and the caption, “Great conversation with @narendramodi discussing India’s incredible tech ecosystem and how the country can benefit from ai. I enjoyed all my meetings with people in the PMOIndia.”

This is the first time the two leaders are meeting up, and both have discussed various aspects of the AI space. They talked about the benefits this technology can offer India and how it can help solve the country’s most pressing issues. Altman also discussed the need for a national AI effort and regulating this new technology.

According to reports, Altman has also discussed how the government plans to use AI in several departments. The government is looking at using conversational AI tools to help farmers learn about government schemes, manage the grievances of disgruntled consumers and carry out other citizen-centric tasks. This is the first time the government has considered adopting conversational AI, which could be a massive game-changer for the entire Indian economy.

During the Digital India Dialogues event at IIT Delhi, Altman also spoke about how he is impressed by how India has embraced its national technology. He mentioned that India is the first country in the world to have embraced ChatGPT, and many of its early adopters are from this country.

The CEO of the AI company also talked about how his organization is working towards building GPT5, a more advanced version of its current platform GPT4. He stated that this development stage is still far away and will take a lot of work and investment before it can reach the development phase.

Altman also said that it is essential to have a national AI initiative because many things depend on this new technology. He said a national AI initiative could allow the government to train ground-up LLMs, pursue new research directions, or fine-tune open-source projects. He even said he would prefer to avoid seeing this new technology controlled by a few companies. He also mentioned that the country has a wealth of talented individuals and a culture of innovation, making it an ideal place for AI to thrive.
