TikTok has been responsible for many dangerous challenges over the years, including the ‘blackout challenge’ that led to 20 deaths in the UK, but this latest stunt is perhaps one of the most terrifying. The ‘boat challenge’ involves people jumping and flipping off the back of a speeding boat into the water, and it has already claimed four lives in Alabama. One victim, a middle-aged man, died in February after hurling himself into the Coosa River while his wife recorded it for social media, and three others were also killed. Officials are now warning the public about this dangerous trend, and even The Today Show aired a feature with stern warnings from officials.
The dangerous stunt is becoming increasingly popular, and many people are filmed jumping off boats for the thrill of it. The problem is that when a person jumps off a moving boat and hits the water at high speeds, the impact can break their necks and cause them to drown. Jim Dennis of Alabama’s Childersburg Rescue Squad said that the trend had led to four “easily avoidable” drowning deaths in the state. He told NBC affiliate WVTM that the jumpers had all suffered broken necks and had drowned after hitting the water. “It’s something that needs to go away and stay away,” he added, urging family members to discourage their loved ones from partaking in this risky challenge.
According to Dennis, the victims all jumped off the back of boats that were moving at high speeds. He pointed out that the physics of it all is simple: when a body lands on the water at 30mph, it can be compared to falling onto concrete, causing the neck to break instantly and leading to drowning. He also warned that the impact could be more deadly if someone hit the boat’s propellers instead of the water.
Dennis emphasized that these deaths were entirely preventable, and he urged TikTok to block these videos to deter the public from taking part in the dangerous stunt. He also urged families and friends to be vigilant, look out for their loved ones, and call 911 if they see someone in the water who doesn’t immediately resurface.
It is unclear if TikTok has blocked these videos, but the company did block another dangerous stunt involving milk crates a few years ago. The platform is notorious for blocking controversial content and has been accused of censoring its users’ freedom of expression. However, the company’s stance on such issues has been changing recently, and the site’s CEO has promised to allow more user-generated content. In a recent interview, he said that TikTok would be more selective in deciding which content to allow, but he would not block all the contents it does not approve of. This change is a step in the right direction for the platform, which was previously accused of censoring the content of its users.
