Telegram App Blocked in Iraq for Mishandling Personal Data

The ministry said it had blocked the app over national security concerns and to preserve the integrity of users’ data, which it said the app had mishandled. The app is widely used in Iraq for messaging, as a news source, and for sharing content. Its robust encryption features make it a popular choice for many to communicate securely.

In a statement, the ministry repeatedly requested Telegram to shut down platforms leaking official state institutions’ data and citizens’ personal information. Still, the company has yet to respond or engage with its requests. It added that it respected citizens’ right to freedom of expression and communication, but this cannot be at the expense of ensuring the security of state institutions and their citizens.

But the block has been met with mixed reactions within the country. Some support it, arguing that the government must prioritize national security. Others are disappointed and frustrated, believing it will limit their ability to express themselves freely.

Tech experts have weighed in on the matter, with some criticizing the decision. Wael Abdulal, an Iraqi tech expert and founder of e-commerce startup Miswag and social media platform Nabd, says the move will be wrong for businesses and people who use the app for secure communications. He adds that it could lead to using less secure chat apps, which could be a boon for terrorist groups.

Other tech experts are worried about the impact on citizen privacy. Omar Alshaikhli, an Iraqi tech expert and the founder of mobile apps Hayatech and Tech Hub, says that the decision will limit citizens’ freedom to express themselves and could force them to switch to less secure options. He adds that it could be a step toward censorship and repression, which will have long-term adverse effects on the country.

The blocking of Telegram will affect around 30 million users in Iraq, including journalists and political activists who depend on the messaging app to publish their content. But the government is expected to lift the ban if the company addresses its concerns.

How to keep kids safe on Telegram

Parents can take several steps to help their children stay safer on the messaging app. One is to help them set up a unique username that does not contain personal information, such as their name or birthday. The next is to adjust the privacy settings. For example, they can restrict who can add them to groups and who can see their phone number. They can also turn on or off who can message them privately. They can also limit who can download their stickers and photos. It’s essential to monitor these settings over time, as they can change based on how your child uses the app and who they interact with within groups. This is especially important if they use the app in a group chat with strangers.
